Possibly the coolest part of the iPhone X having Face ID is the iPhone’s ability to detect your face even in the dark. While this was part of the rumor, it’s an impressive technology to incorporate nonetheless. Face ID works to unlock your iPhone X thanks to Apple’s TrueDepth camera system made up of a dot projector, infrared camera, and flood illuminator. The TrueDepth camera works with the new A11 Bionic chip to scan a user’s face with enough accuracy to safely and securely authenticate the person’s face, even in low light or with glasses or a beard. Apple promises that Face ID can’t be spoofed with a mask or picture, but couldn’t make guarantees against an evil twin!
However, Touch ID isn’t going anywhere. Only the iPhone X will include Face ID; the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus still use the beloved Home button and Touch ID.
